The 64% number for corn is up 1% from last week and is 5% above a year ago. Again the thing this report does not measure is moisture in the soil and the lateness of the crop. Rainfall and the date of the killing frost become more important every day as we discovered on the Pro Farmer Crop Tour.
As we look at USDA's rating of the corn crop reaching the dent stage, nationally its only 26% compared to the 5-year average of 47%. A year ago the number was 58%. Corn reaching the dough stage is now 68% nationally compared to the average of 88%.
The soybean crop is in a similar conditon. The health of the crop is good, it just needs some rain and lots of time to reach maturity. Soybeans are rated 61% good to excellent compared to 55% one year ago. Again the pod setting in Iowa is 9% behind the average at 89%. Nationally it is 6% behind at 88%.
Spring wheat harvest is now 61% complete, 11 points behind the 5-year average and 22 points behind last year.
